Apparently the 70-300 IS has a coating on the glass that is more typical of L than consumer which gives it a boost. 50 f1/4 has FTM focusing, etc... The 17-85 is a piece of crap lens, to be fair. But it's not an 'L' quality, and not the only reason to buy L's. Non-L prime lenses can get you sharper images than L zooms. Especially the macro lenses. L primes are where it's at, but they cost a bit more.
