Animated by the spirit of powerful communal and individual ancestors, masquerades do more than simply visit their towns and communities: they are social and political forces with great potential and power. WebJOHN THABITI WILLIS. I am an assistant professor of African history (and of the African diaspora) at Carleton College. My work engages history and memory, ethnography and performance, gender and kinship through written, embodied, and digital media. I conducted research for my dissertation in Nigeria, where I served as a Fulbright-Hays scholars.
